The Gift Wrapped in Grit
James 1:2–5, 12
In the book of James, trials and difficulties are presented not as punishments or signs of failure, but as essential components of spiritual growth.
1. Trials build endurance and maturity.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2–4 NIV).
2. God gives wisdom generously in difficulty.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (James 1:5 NIV).
3. Blessed are those who endure.
“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12 NIV).
There’s a reward—not necessarily immediate or material, but a spiritual promise—for those who remain faithful and steady in hardship.
