Elbow Bone Connected to the Cuboid Bone
I Corinthians 12:12–27
The image of society as a body was not original to Paul, but what he did with it was.
Ancient writers used the image to explain the dominance of the powerful or the need for a stable hierarchy.
In his use of this image, Paul:
- created a new primary identity (v. 12–13)
- dissolved status boundaries (v. 13, 21–24)
- reframed power as service (v. 22–25)
- made you responsible for knowing something about those who are “other” than you (v. 25–26)
How can I be more aware and honor others? (1 Peter 2:17)
